Murchison falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest national park gazeted in 1952 and is located in northwestern Uganda.

At Murchison Falls, the Nile squeezes through an 8m wide gorge and plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley walls with a thunderous roar into the “Devil’s Cauldron”, creating a trademark rainbow which can be witnessed on your visit/hike to the top of the falls. The park is among the closest parks from the capital city, 280 kms away from Kampala. This has earned it the popularity of one of the most visited national parks in Uganda.

The park is divided into two by the Nile River with the northern bank and the southern bank of the river. The northern section is a savanna dominated by grassland, borasus palm trees riverine woodland and this is where most of the animal concentrations are found, while the southern section is dominated by forest and woodland vegetation.

The park is blessed with several animal species where there has been a record of 144 mammals, over 500 bird species, 51 reptiles and 51 amphibians. Some of the notable animals that are commonly spotted by travelers include lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, Uganda kobs, lelwel hartebeests, oribi, buffalos, warthogs (pumba), hippos, hyenas among others. Bird species such as the northern camine bee eater, African fish eagle, brown snake eagle, Abyssinian ground hornbill and African grey hornbill among others can be spotted.

According to the state of giraffes made by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, Murchison falls national park had over 2,200 giraffes by end of 2023 thus putting the park in the first place and the park with the highest number of Nubian giraffes in the world with over 60% of the world’s population.
