<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">This lava dammed lake is found in south western Uganda in the districts of Kabale and Rubanda.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Lake Bunyonyi is about 900m (3000ft) 22hich crowns it as the deepest lake in Uganda and the second deepest lake in Africa. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">Lake Bunyonyi derives its name from the local setting, the word “Bunyonyi” means small birds and being a place with many small birds, it gets the name lake Bunyonyi. This means that it’s a special gem for birders where so many water and land animals can be found. Trekking through the swamps that are found on the lakeshores, one is expected to see and watch so many small and big birds. Some of the birds that can be spotted around Lake Bunyonyi include but not limited to, pied kingfisher, malachite kingfisher, African jacana, long tailed cormorant, great cormorant, red knobbed coot, weaver birds, black crake, tropical boubou, arrow marked babbler, grey crowned crane (Uganda’s national bird) blue headed coucal, swamp flycatcher, common fiscal, ashy flycatcher<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>among others. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">Lake Bunyonyi is dotted with 29 beautiful islands that create a great view from the hills around the lake. Among the 29 islands, are some of the famous and historical islands like the punishment island (locally known as Akampene). The punishment island gets famous from way back in the past as a place where girls who became pregnant before marriage would be dumped and left to starve to death(however by the 20<sup>th</sup> century, the act had stopped) as a punishment and lesson to the other girls. Some girls would be rescued by the fishermen or young men who would be having no dowry and they would take the girls to be their wives.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Apart from the punishment island, one is also able to adventure the leprosy island/Bwama island a place well known for hosting the leprosy patients way back in the 1920s. In 1921, Dr.Leonard sharp, English missionary founded a leprosy hospital on Bwama Island (an island on Lake Bunyonyi) where most of the patients around east Africa were quarantined for treatment.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With new developments coming in at the lake, some islands have been developed into good and nice hotels and lodges which give accommodation to travellers and tourists for those who would prefer having a night at an island. There is also an island where wildlife was introduced making it the only island with wildlife on lake Bunyonyi. Kyahugye Island gives travellers and tourists a chance to see some of the wild animals some of which would have been missed on a safari. These animals include zebras, waterbucks, impalas and Uganda kobs. More to<a name="_GoBack"></a> the above islands is also an adventure park that is located on an island where one have can have zip lining experience crossing from the island to the mainland and other activities </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">The fresh waters of the lake which are also bilharzia free are good for swimming. One who loves swimming is sure going to have a chance of swimming in the deepest lake in Uganda. The waters of the lake are also free from dangerous aquatic animals making it an added advantage to the swimmers. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">The communities around the lake such as the Batwa will entice the whole experience around the lake as they entertain people with their cultural experiences through dances, plays and other activities. The Batwa are believed to have existed in the equatorial forests of Africa from 60,000 years ago. They were evicted from the forests of Uganda such as Echuya, Mgahinga and Bwindi in a bid to save the endangered mountain gorillas and they have since then been adjusting to the life out of the forest. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">There are so many activities that can be done around lake Bunyonyi some of which have already been mentioned above but include, bird watching, hiking, canoeing, nature walks, cultural visits, charity visits, swimming, photography, agro-tourism, camping, zip lining and the best being mountain gorilla tracking which can be done as one is staying around the lake since Bwindi is located a few kilometers from lake Bunyonyi. </span></p>
